The internet is going through a fundamental change. Information used to be scarce, and access to it was a source of power. Today, the problem is almost the opposite; there is too much information floating online.
Almost any news story is quickly followed by competing versions of events, each supported by its own selection of facts, images, statistics, and explanations. Misinformation has also become more sophisticated by combining real information with selective facts and plausible reasoning to lead people toward flawed conclusions.
This creates a new problem. Information can be close enough to the truth to appear credible while still distorting how people understand an issue. Over time, that affects public opinion, which then feeds back into the information people encounter.
AI is likely to accelerate this process. Seeing is no longer enough to establish that something is real. Images, videos, voices, documents, and even apparently authentic accounts can now be generated or manipulated at very low cost. Generative AI, deepfakes, automated content farms, and bot-driven accounts are making it increasingly difficult to distinguish genuine information from synthetic or misleading content.

The economic consequence is important. As the cost of producing information approaches zero, the value of finding, checking, filtering, and trusting information rises. The scarce resource is no longer content itself. It is confidence in the content.
This shift could create opportunities across a range of sectors. As it becomes harder to tell whether an image, video, voice recording, document, or product is genuine, reliable verification will become increasingly important. Cybersecurity will have to deal not only with whether a system has been compromised, but also with whether the information presented to a user can be trusted.
Technologies such as digital provenance, watermarking, authentication, and deepfake detection will therefore become more important. The same principle applies outside the digital world. Pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, luxury goods, and critical industrial components all depend on being able to establish where something came from and whether it has been altered or substituted. In a market where consumers and businesses are increasingly exposed to fraud, proof of authenticity can itself become a product.
At the same time, high-quality filtering may become more valuable than information retrieval. A search today can produce hundreds of results, many of which repeat the same information or add very little. AI makes this problem more pronounced because producing plausible summaries and articles is now cheap. The valuable service is increasingly deciding what is worth reading.
That creates room for professional newsletters, specialist research services, expert communities, and AI systems that can extract information while preserving links to reliable sources. Ten thousand search results are not necessarily useful. Ten well-chosen sources, selected by someone who understands the subject and is willing to stand behind the selection, can be much more valuable. The advantage lies not simply in finding information, but in applying judgment to it.
The more convincing synthetic media becomes, the more value there may also be in experiences that are difficult to reproduce remotely. Meeting someone in person, visiting a factory, observing a site, attending a live performance, or speaking directly with people involved in an event provides information that is difficult to obtain from a generated summary or video.
This could benefit high-quality conferences, intellectual forums, study tours, live events, and independent field research. For researchers and investors in particular, visiting a site or talking directly to the people involved can reveal things that are invisible in a large collection of documents. The physical world is not immune to manipulation, but it remains harder to manufacture at scale than digital content.
Reliable and well-structured data may become increasingly scarce as well. AI systems depend on data, but more data does not necessarily mean better data. As the public internet fills with automatically generated and low-quality material, it may become harder for AI systems to distinguish useful information from noise.
Some of the most valuable datasets may therefore be those that are difficult to obtain and have clear provenance, such as hospital records, corporate operating data, industrial information, legal decisions, scientific databases, and human-verified datasets. The advantage will not necessarily belong to whoever has the most data. It may belong to whoever has data that is accurate, well structured, consistently maintained, and tied to a reliable source.
There may also be a growing premium on genuinely human-made work. As AI-generated writing, images, music, and design become commonplace, some consumers may begin to value evidence that a product was actually created by a person.
This does not mean that everything made by humans will suddenly become valuable. But in markets where synthetic content becomes the norm, human involvement itself may become a form of differentiation. Publishing, design, handicrafts, independent journalism, and other creative fields could increasingly emphasize authorship, provenance, and the identity of the creator.
Trust may also shift away from anonymous platforms and toward identifiable individuals. People with established reputations, professional track records, and a history of making reliable judgments may become more valuable precisely because they are accountable for what they say.
These developments point to a broader shift in where value sits in the information economy. For much of the internet era, the objective was to produce and distribute more information. In an environment of near-infinite content, that model becomes less useful. The scarce resources are increasingly verification, judgment, provenance, attention, and trust.
Businesses that can reliably answer questions such as whether something is real, whether a source is reliable, which information actually matters, where data came from, and who is responsible for a conclusion may capture an increasing share of the value created by the information economy.
The next phase of the internet may therefore be less about producing more information and more about establishing why anyone should believe it.
