Memorabilia belonging to the late Marilyn Monroe is set to be auctioned, providing a rare look into the life of this Hollywood star. The auction will feature items such as clothes, jewelry, letters, handwritten notes, paintings, and poetry. Brian Chanes, a senior director at Heritage Auctions, remarked on Monroe’s lasting impact and popularity.
Born Norma Jeane Mortenson in 1926, Monroe gained fame as an actress, model, singer, and sex symbol before her death in 1962. This auction will take place on June 1, coinciding with what would have been her 100th birthday and will include personal items from the estate of her close friends, poets Norman and Hedda Rosten. These items, dating from 1955 to 1962, include documents that reveal insights into her personal life, including her relationships, fears, and thoughts about mortality.
Notably, the collection includes letters from her ex-husband, playwright Arthur Miller, and an unseen letter from her psychiatrist discussing the day before her death. One poignant piece from the time she filmed “Some Like It Hot” features Monroe expressing her distress and feeling overwhelmed, illustrated by a drawing of a stick figure in water. This collection offers a unique and intimate look at Monroe’s struggles with mental health throughout her life.
