Taiwan Watches Closely as China May Raise Pressure During Trump Xi Meeting

China may attempt political manoeuvring over the Taiwan issue during next week’s meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing, according to a senior Taiwanese intelligence official.

China may attempt political manoeuvring over the Taiwan issue during next week’s meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing, according to a senior Taiwanese intelligence official.

The comments come amid growing concern in Taiwan that Washington’s approach toward the island could shift as the United States and China attempt to manage wider tensions involving trade, security, and regional influence.

China considers Taiwan part of its territory and describes the island as the most sensitive issue in its relationship with the United States. Taiwan’s government strongly rejects Beijing’s sovereignty claims and insists only the Taiwanese people can decide their future.

Taiwan Concerned Over Possible Diplomatic Trade Offs

Taipei is closely monitoring whether Trump’s meeting with Xi could result in changes to America’s long standing Taiwan policy in exchange for economic concessions from Beijing.

Officials in Taiwan are particularly concerned that China may offer to increase purchases of American aircraft or agricultural products while seeking softer language or strategic flexibility from Washington on Taiwan related issues.

Trump’s transactional style of diplomacy has previously unsettled several American allies, raising fears that geopolitical issues could become tied to economic negotiations.

Taiwanese Intelligence Chief Warns of Chinese Manoeuvring

Speaking before parliament in Taipei, National Security Bureau Director General Tsai Ming yen said Beijing could attempt tactical manoeuvring during the high level talks.

He stressed, however, that the United States has repeatedly reassured Taiwan through both public and private channels that its policy toward the island remains unchanged.

Tsai said the summit between Trump and Xi was more likely to focus on managing tensions rather than solving fundamental disputes between the two global powers.

According to Taiwan’s assessment, the broader relationship between China and the United States is expected to remain fragile despite efforts to maintain stability.

Taiwan Expected to Be a Key Topic in Trump Xi Talks

The Taiwan issue is widely expected to be discussed during the summit, although officials on both sides appear aware of the risks of escalation.

Earlier this week, Marco Rubio said both Washington and Beijing understand that neither country benefits from destabilising events involving Taiwan.

That statement reflects growing international concern over military activity and political tensions in the Taiwan Strait, which has become one of the most sensitive flashpoints in global politics.

US Support for Taiwan Remains Central

The United States remains Taiwan’s most important international supporter despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties between Washington and Taipei.

Under American law, the United States is required to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself. This long standing arrangement has remained a central source of tension between Washington and Beijing for decades.

While the upcoming Trump Xi meeting may reduce immediate tensions between the two countries, analysts believe the Taiwan issue will continue to remain one of the most difficult and strategically sensitive disputes in international relations.
