Bangladesh’s Election Flashpoints: The February 12 Stakes

This election is seen as important for the country's return to democracy after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in August 2024.

Bangladeshis will vote on Thursday, with around 128 million eligible participants. This election is seen as important for the country’s return to democracy after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in August 2024. Currently, Bangladesh is governed by an unelected interim government.

Voters are primarily concerned about corruption, which ranks as their top issue, according to a recent poll. Bangladesh has struggled with corruption and consistently ranks low in international indices. The BNP and Jamaat e Islami, the leading parties, have made anti-corruption efforts central to their campaigns.

Inflation is another significant issue, having risen to 8.58% in January. Many voters also cite rising prices as a major concern. Economic development is the third top concern, as the country has faced challenges recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic which hurt its garment sector.

Additionally, with a large youth population, there is pressure to create jobs. Hasina’s Awami League party is barred from the election, which may lead to some supporters boycotting, but many still expect a significant turnout, with many former Awami League voters now supporting the BNP.
