The BRICS group of nations adopted a joint declaration on Saturday, showing “deep concern” about the Middle East war. They called for maximum restraint and emphasized the need for a “multilateral approach” that respects different national views. This declaration was made during the BRICS leaders’ annual summit in New Delhi, amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran, which have recently intensified after a pause in fighting.
The BRICS bloc includes both Iran and the United Arab Emirates, making it challenging for New Delhi to reach a joint statement. The New Delhi Declaration urged restraint to avoid worsening the situation and reaffirmed the commitment of member nations to solve international disputes peacefully through dialogue and diplomacy. Additionally, the declaration expressed worry about “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures” distorting trade amid U.S. sanctions against Iran and Russia. The BRICS group consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the UAE.
