The Central Committee of China’s Communist Party is meeting in Beijing from Monday to Thursday to set the political tone ahead of the party congress in late 2027. This is the fifth gathering since Xi Jinping’s third term began in 2022. The meeting’s official theme is tightening discipline within the party, but discussions will likely include personnel changes and how to handle disgraced former officials.
To prevent leaks, participants must stay at the venue for the meeting’s duration, and little information is shared with the public until it concludes. Foreign media and most Chinese reporters do not have access. When the meeting ends, the official Xinhua news agency will release a summary of decisions made, but the phrasing tends to be vague. Any disagreements among leaders are usually not mentioned to maintain the appearance of unity.
A more detailed release typically follows days later. Past plenums were held at the tightly secured Jingxi Hotel, but this year’s location is not disclosed. The atmosphere during these meetings can vary greatly; for instance, a key summit in 1978 led by Deng Xiaoping initiated significant economic reforms for China.
