German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy after US President Donald Trump’s suggestion for his removal. Wadephul emphasized that Germany stands with Ukraine and fully supports Zelenskiy in his challenging role. His remarks came during a meeting of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and highlighted the growing divide between Germany and the US.
Trump, who recently announced a diesel supply deal with Russia, criticized Ukraine’s actions and called for Zelenskiy’s replacement. Germany, being the largest European donor to Ukraine, will continue sanctions against Russia, despite the US temporarily lifting some sanctions on Russian fuel.
Wadephul urged for increased pressure on Russia to encourage peace negotiations, stating that “more pressure on Putin” is needed. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham also spoke with Zelenskiy, assuring him that the UK would strengthen its sanctions on Russia.
