British police have arrested a dual UK-Iranian national in connection with an alleged terrorist plot involving RAF Fairford, an airbase used by the US to target Iran. This incident began when police received a tip from a local farmer who saw suspicious vans and masked individuals near the airbase. Five suspects were initially arrested but released on bail a day later, while a police investigation continued. These five individuals, all British nationals aged 23 to 25, are under investigation for potential terrorist activities.
US officials, including President Donald Trump, suggested that the plot could have caused significant damage and hinted at foreign involvement. Iran had previously declared RAF Fairford a legitimate target, raising concerns about a potential Iranian link. British counter-terrorism police are exploring the possibility of foreign state involvement, and Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated there might be a connection to Iran.
Iran, however, has denied these accusations and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran for clarification. During searches following the arrests, police did not find any explosives but did recover a quantity of petrol. The suspects remain under strict conditions regarding their movements and communications following their release.
RAF Fairford has historical significance, having served in major conflicts such as the Gulf War and the invasion of Iraq. Britain has increased security there in light of threats from Iran, especially after earlier warnings from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards against the base being used for US military operations.
