Turkey’s emergence as NATO’s indispensable partner in 2026 is not a product of Erdogan’s charm or Trump’s personal loyalties, it is the strategic payoff of two decades of deliberate multi-alignment that positioned Ankara as the one NATO member capable of operating simultaneously inside the alliance’s collective defense framework and outside it, and the Ankara summit confirmed that NATO 3.0 cannot be built without Turkey at its center.

The Ankara summit story is a self-writing one that has been written many times this week. Trump showed up, extolled Erdogan, promised F-35s, hinted at sanctions relief, and walked away, claiming a lot of unity, and threatening to reduce trade with Spain.
