US, Armenia Sign Strategic Partnership Ahead of Elections

U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan signed a strategic partnership agreement in Yerevan.

U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan signed a strategic partnership agreement in Yerevan.

This occurred just before parliamentary elections in Armenia. They also agreed on a framework for critical minerals and a transit corridor that would connect Azerbaijan to Turkey through southern Armenia.

The meeting took place at Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport during Rubio’s short visit. The elections on June 7 involve Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party, which supports closer ties with the West, and various opposition parties that favor Russia.

The Kremlin warned that Armenia might lose favorable gas prices if it moves away from Russian integration.
