Kallas: EU member states not ready to offer Ukraine concrete membership date

Kaja Kallas stated that EU governments are not prepared to provide Ukraine with a specific membership date, despite Zelenskiy requesting one as part of security guarantees for a peace deal with Russia.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that EU governments are not prepared to provide Ukraine with a specific membership date, despite President Volodymyr Zelenskiy requesting one as part of security guarantees for a peace deal with Russia. Kallas mentioned that a lot of work still needs to be done before any date can be given.

Ukrainian membership in the EU has been suggested for 2027 in a 20-point peace plan involving the U. S., Ukraine, and the EU, intended to support Ukraine’s economy post-war. However, many EU governments think this timeline is unrealistic, as accession depends on Ukraine meeting EU standards through a merit-based process.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics supported Kallas but noted the slim chances of a quick peace agreement. He remarked that while the EU has historically found creative solutions when needed, it must also consider the interests of Western Balkan countries and Moldova, which are also seeking membership. Ukraine applied to join the EU shortly after Russia’s invasion in February 2022, aiming to strengthen its ties with the West, despite facing challenges from the ongoing war and Hungary’s opposition to membership talks.
