Nielsen’s Warning: Trump’s Eye Still on Acquiring Greenland

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen expressed on Monday that, despite U. S. President Donald Trump ruling out military action, the U. S. still aims to control Greenland. Trump has called for U. S. control due to national security concerns regarding Russia and China, which some European NATO allies argue threatens Denmark’s sovereignty and the unity of NATO. Although Trump has reduced aggressive threats and suggested a NATO deal for U. S. access to Greenland, the specifics remain unclear.

Nielsen highlighted that the U. S. continues to seek “paths to ownership and control over Greenland. ” He addressed the mental health concerns among the population due to the pressure of uncertainty, stating it is unacceptable. Diplomatic discussions among the U. S., Denmark, and Greenland began last week to address American security concerns while respecting Denmark’s boundaries. Nielsen emphasized that Greenlanders would likely choose Denmark over the U. S. if forced to decide, without mentioning independence. The issue of ownership also conflicts with Inuit cultural values regarding land stewardship, as Greenlandic law allows house ownership but not land ownership.
