Zelenskiy Puts Budanov in Charge of Key Administration Role

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appointed Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine's defence intelligence, as his new chief adviser.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy appointed Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s defence intelligence, as his new chief adviser. This move places a respected military figure in a role that has typically been held by civilians focused on local politics. Budanov takes over from Andriy Yermak, who resigned amid public anger over a corruption scandal during Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

Zelenskiy aims to regain public trust through this appointment as Ukraine faces ongoing military pressure from Russia and calls from the U. S. for a swift resolution to the war. He stated on social media that Ukraine requires increased emphasis on security and diplomacy, noting Budanov’s experience and capability to deliver results.

Budanov, 39, has led Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence since 2020 and has coordinated operations against Russian forces. He has also managed negotiations regarding prisoner exchanges. Known for his frequent media presence and cautious remarks about Ukraine’s strategies, Budanov emphasized the importance of public visibility in combating Russian narratives.

Yermak, Budanov’s predecessor, was a key figure criticized for his influence and resigned days after a search of his home linked to a corruption investigation involving substantial kickbacks. While not formally accused, there was significant pressure for his removal even prior to the investigation.
