Why China Is Opposing Flight Suspensions and the Embargo on Venezuela

Venezuelan airspace is currently experiencing electromagnetic interference over the Caribbean Sea, part of US military activity aimed at isolating the Venezuelan government and President “Nicolás Maduro’s regime” through multi-layered pressure. This comes amid increasing warnings from the Civil Aviation Authority against travel to Venezuela, prompting international airlines to avoid Venezuelan airspace. The closure of Venezuelan airspace is seen as part of the US “maximum pressure policy” adopted by President “Donald Trump” to forcibly change the Venezuelan regime and install a more pro-Washington government that would safeguard US interests in the Caribbean and Latin America.

At the end of November 2025, air traffic over Venezuela came to a near standstill following US warnings to airlines. Caracas responded by revoking the licenses of airlines that had suspended their flights.  Venezuela has revoked the licenses of six airlines that suspended flights to the country following a warning from the United States due to the ongoing military activity in the region. The six airlines whose licenses were revoked by the Venezuelan government are Iberia (Spain), TAP (Portugal), Avianca (Colombia), LATAM (Brazil), GOL (Brazil), and Turkish Airlines. Venezuelan aviation authorities announced that they would penalize these six airlines by prohibiting them from flying over Venezuelan airspace, accusing them of participating in acts of state terrorism promoted by the United States government through their unilateral suspension of commercial air operations.

Due to the massive US military buildup against the Venezuelan regime, air traffic to and from Venezuela was suspended and completely paralyzed in recent hours after US President “Donald Trump” announced the complete closure of Venezuelan airspace. This unprecedented US military buildup in the Caribbean region has raised widespread questions about what the next steps will be. Live flight maps on the Flightradar24 website, which tracks civilian air traffic, reflected the immediate impact of the US escalation against Venezuela, with commercial aircraft virtually disappearing from Venezuelan airspace. Mass cancellations of flights to Venezuela began from several countries, including Colombia, and airports across Latin America experienced chaos following the direct US warning against travel to Venezuela and the suspension of all flights to and from the country.  It is worth noting that Venezuelan airlines and some airlines from countries allied with Caracas continued to fly into Venezuelan airspace, despite the widening scope of warnings and increasing restrictions.

On November 29, 2025, the United States claimed that the airspace over Venezuela and its surrounding region should be considered completely closed. The Venezuelan government issued a statement strongly opposing these American pronouncements, deeming them a violation of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law. Several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean also expressed their opposition to these American statements regarding Venezuela and the attempt to forcibly change its political system.

Several new airlines have recently announced the suspension of their flights to and from Venezuela. Panamanian airlines announced a two-day suspension of flights, joining eight other countries that had already halted their operations in response to a warning issued by the “US Federal Aviation Administration” (FAA) due to increased military activity in the Caribbean region. This is especially true after the United States deployed the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, and its fleet of warships and fighter jets to the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela’s maritime borders. This deployment, along with a large US fleet of warships and fighter jets, was ostensibly part of anti-drug operations across Venezuelan borders. However, the real reason behind this is the Trump administration’s desire to forcibly change the Venezuelan regime and overthrow current Venezuelan President “Maduro.” This became clear recently when Washington gave the current Venezuelan regime a specific and conditional deadline to step down, hoping to install a new Venezuelan president loyal to the United States.  With US President “Donald Trump” issuing several conflicting signals regarding the possibility of strikes on Venezuelan territory, he has authorized covert operations by the CIA inside Venezuela, while also confirming that he does not rule out military intervention to remove the current Venezuelan regime. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has condemned this warning and the US military buildup on his country’s borders, considering it a threat aimed at overthrowing him and seizing the country’s oil reserves.

China has taken a firm stance against the blockade imposed on Venezuela and the anticipated scenario. China strongly opposes any foreign interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs and has called on the United States to lift its unilateral and illegal sanctions imposed on Caracas, including any form of air blockade or suspension of flights. On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson “Lin Jian” stated that “China opposes interference by external forces in Venezuela’s internal affairs under any pretext and calls on all parties to avoid further escalation of the situation.” Lin Jian also stated at a regular press conference that “China opposes any actions that violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and infringe upon the sovereignty and security of other countries.” He further urged all parties to jointly uphold the status of Latin America and the Caribbean as a region of peace.

Based on the preceding analysis, we understand China’s firm opposition to the unilateral US blockade and sanctions against Venezuela. China has repeatedly affirmed its unwavering support for the government of Venezuelan President “Nicolás Maduro” and Venezuela’s national sovereignty in the face of US attempts to forcibly change the regime or suspend flights over Venezuelan territory.
