The Woman of Many First: Is Kamala Harris Crucial for the Indo-Pacific?

She is the first woman of color, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American who was sworn as the Vice-President of the United States of America.

Is she the superwoman the world needs today? Believing in the promise of America, freedom, opportunity, and justice- Kamala Harris, Vice President of the United States of America surprised the world when suddenly, US President Joe Bidden announced his withdrawal to the 2024 American polls, and eventually endorsed his running mate as Presidential nominee. Few days thereafter, VP Kamala Harris rose above the presidential surveys against Donald Trump, and as of this writing she is now the Presidential Presumptive of the Democrat Party.

Extraordinary Roles

The first of many. She is the first woman of color, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American who was sworn as the Vice-President of the United States of America. Earlier in her life, she was an advocate for empowering marginalized and minorities as a District Attorney of San Francisco and Attorney General of California, as she also served as a Senator. Today, she is representing many breakthroughs and barriers, assuming the role as Democratic Presidential contender on 5th November 2024.

Vice-Presidency

As a leader of all Americans, she was a trusted personality of President Joe Biden. They have worked positively in delivering policy that uplifted millions of Americans. Their economic investment created an unprecedented number of employment; thus, such action lowered the unemployment rate. Moreover, promoting the small business for startups and entrepreneurs contributed to the lives of many middle- and lower-class Americans than any previous administration. Nationally, the Vice President uplifted women’s empowerment from work places, to safe spaces as she believed that freedom to vote, democracy, away from violence are important concerns she pushed in her first two years of office.

Standing Together, Everyone in Unison

Let’s Win This.” Inspiring all Americans to come together from all walks and lived experiences, she is determined to assume the highest post of the United States of America. Fueled by the love of country, she keeps on emphasizing that “we believe in the promise of America- freedom, opportunities, and justice for all.”

ASEAN- Indo Pacific Region

Responding to global challenges while addressing long-term vision was the subject of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris’ third trip to East Asia in 2023 as she represented the American people in a strengthened alliance of the US to ASEAN, and with the Indo-Pacific region.

The United States has an enduring commitment to Southeast Asia and, more broadly, to the Indo-Pacific.  We are a proud Pacific power, and the American people have a profound stake in the future of the Indo-Pacific.

We share historic bonds and common values with many of the people and nations here.  And our alliances and partnerships support the security and prosperity of the United States and ASEAN.

Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the strengthened alliance between Southeast Asia and the United States for the commitment in defense and deterrence for the security presence in the Indo-Pacific region is imperative to the protection of ensuring regional stability. There are around 600,000 American jobs, including the U.S.-ASEAN economic cooperation that significantly represents the interests of all the markets involved. She further asserted that “ASEAN is at the center of America’s commitments to the Indo-Pacific.  As the United States Indo-Pacific Strategy makes clear, we are committed to ASEAN centrality.”

The U.S. Vice President further emphasized the importance of commitment to international rules and norms. This further includes the pressing national and regional concerns; one is the ongoing crisis in Myanmar. “The United States will continue to press the regime to end the horrific violence, to release all those unjustly detained, and to re-establish Myanmar’s path to inclusive democracy, and we will continue to support ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus,” she expressed.

The U.S. Vice-President demonstrated that the American government invested in infrastructure, digital economy, including responses to climate crisis, health security, cultural and educational exchange programs as part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership reflective of the U.S.-ASEAN enlarged alliance.

Conclusion

With less than 100 days before the U.S. Presidential elections, Democrats came together to support Kamala Harris’ victory against Donald Trump. Her campaign encouraged voters to think beyond Donald Trump. She wants her campaign to focus on fighting for the Americans. In what she described as the people’s power campaign, the grassroot campaign, she is confident to be a peoples’ President.

Focused on the Future,” she tagged during her first public appearance as a presidential nominee.

To her, building the middle class of America is a fight for the future. As expected, Harris’ Presidency will certainly promote the rights of immigrants, those who aspire for what America can offer. The “American Dream” will be open for all non-Americans who wish to explore possibilities. As a woman of color, she vows to respect law and justice, where there is freedom and acceptance.

The Harris Presidency will be a continuity of the Indo-Pacific policy of the Biden Administration. With her attendance to many official working visits in the region, there is familiarity and awareness of what is happening on the ground. The United States will certainly remain an ally and a friend to many countries who reciprocate such alliances over the years.

Issues on the South China Sea, Myanmar crisis, climate change, renewable energies, are some spotlights that will continue, and hopefully that resolutions may be compiled the soonest, for the benefit of the global citizens.

Politically, there might be a higher attention since Harris is also of Asian descent. A more enchanted people-to-people relations, cultural cooperations, may unfold as well with the political and economic harmonization through a broader bilateral and multilateral alliances with the United States of America.
