Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan could meet a similar fate to that of Saddam Hussein, who governed Iraq from 1979 until 2003 and was executed in 2006.
“Erdogan follows in the footsteps of Saddam Hussein and threatens to attack Israel. Just let him remember what happened there and how it ended,” the top Israeli diplomat wrote on X in response to Erdogan’s remarks.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry responded by saying that for the crimes of genocide “Netanyahu will end like Hitler.”
On July 28, the Turkish president said that Turkey may enter Israel, just as it did in Nagorno-Karabakh and Libya. In his opinion, the Turks simply “must be very strong” to do so.
The relationship between Israel and Turkey significantly worsened after the start of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023. Both parties exchanged harsh words and made mutual accusations. By the end of October 2023, the Israeli Foreign Ministry decided to bring back its diplomats from Ankara in order to review the state of relations. Similarly, Turkey recalled its ambassador from Tel Aviv for discussions.
