Claudia Sheinbaum, a Mexican climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor, celebrated her triumph in the recent presidential elections as the representative of the Let’s Keep Making History coalition.
Following the announcement of the rapid count results by the National Electoral Institute early Monday morning, Sheinbaum delivered her acceptance speech. The initial figures indicated her victory with a majority of votes ranging between 58.3 percent and 60.7 percent.
At 61 years old, Sheinbaum is set to make history as Mexico’s first female president since gaining independence over two centuries ago. Her opponent, Xochitl Galvez, acknowledged defeat on Monday, securing between 26.6 percent and 28.6 percent of the votes in favor of her ruling party counterpart, Sheinbaum.
The only male candidate, Jorge Alvarez Maynez, who represents the Citizens’ Movement party, had between 9.9 percent and 10.8 percent of the votes.
