Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno was sworn on Thursday for a five-year term in a ceremony attended by regional leaders and other foreign dignitaries.
The victory of Deby in the May 6 polls was officially confirmed by the Chadian Constitutional Court last week. He garnered 61 percent of the vote, while Prime Minister Succes Masra secured second place with 18.54 percent. The swearing-in ceremony occurred in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad.
According to the Constitutional Council, 75.78 percent of the over 8 million registered voters participated in the presidential election. This election holds great significance as it signifies the end of three years of transitional military rule and the restoration of constitutional order in the central African nation.
Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 40, a former army general, assumed power after his father, Idriss Deby Itno, died from wounds sustained on the front line in the country’s north in April 2021. He has since led a transitional government tasked with governing the central African country amid political and military crises.
