The South African government has reassured its citizens that the upcoming national and provincial elections will be conducted in a secure and safe environment. Minister of Defense and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise, emphasized that law enforcement officers will take decisive action against anyone attempting to disrupt the elections, ensuring that they are held without any disturbances. Modise further highlighted the government’s reliance on coordinated and intelligence-led planning and operations throughout the entire electoral process.
Measures have been implemented to safeguard all public facilities used for voting, including national key points and other essential infrastructure that may be targeted by criminals. Modise emphasized that tampering with or damaging such infrastructure is a criminal offense, carrying a maximum sentence of 30 years. Additionally, prosecutors are prepared to address offenses such as electoral fraud, corruption, interference with the duties of electoral officials, and coercion to vote. Modise urged the public to refrain from spreading false and unverified information, rumors, and threats, emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior during this critical period.
The 2024 elections in South Africa are anticipated to be highly competitive, with over 14,000 candidates competing for 887 seats in national and provincial legislatures, as stated by the country’s electoral management body. The elections are scheduled to take place on May 29.
