Iran is waiting for a response from the US regarding its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stop the ongoing fighting in the Middle East. This proposal was conveyed to the US through Qatari mediators during the UN General Assembly. The deal could be put into action within seven days, but President Trump is doubtful about Iran fulfilling the terms and has indicated that a bombing campaign may occur after the upcoming US midterm elections.
Despite this skepticism, a US official described the talks with Iran through intermediaries as constructive. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, stated that if the US is serious about reaching a deal, everything is ready for a countdown to reopen the strait and pause fighting. He also mentioned that if an agreement is reached, discussions on various issues such as Iran’s nuclear program could follow. However, Trump has been firm in his stance against Iran obtaining nuclear weapons, while an Iranian official emphasized that Iran would not compromise on its nuclear rights.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran is open to talks about its nuclear program but refuses to be bullied. He insisted that Iran does not desire war but will protect itself against threats. Araqchi revealed that Iran has proposed a ceasefire plan that includes the US lifting its sanctions and releasing frozen funds, but past diplomatic efforts have failed to resolve the conflict, which started in February with US and Israeli attacks.
Since the war began, there have been ongoing cycles of attacks and temporary pauses, resulting in significant casualties and damage to Iran’s economy and military. Iran has retaliated against US interests and its allies in the Gulf through drone and missile strikes. The riots have also spread throughout the region, affecting various countries involved in the conflict.
Additionally, the Saudi-backed Yemeni government has faced attacks from Houthi fighters, supported by Iran. Saudi defense forces recently intercepted missiles and drones aimed at their cities. The ongoing violence has worsened humanitarian issues in Yemen, affecting children’s health. Meanwhile, defense officials from Turkey and Pakistan have met with Saudi Arabia to discuss security cooperation in light of the situation.
