During a speech at the UN General Assembly, China’s Vice President Han Zheng criticized the United States for its actions against Cuba and called for respect for the sovereignty of Gulf countries. He urged the “relevant country” to stop threatening Cuba and to lift its blockade, which has significantly impacted Cuba’s oil supply. The remarks came amid a pressure campaign by the US aimed at blocking oil from reaching Cuba and following military tensions involving Iran.
Han emphasized that major countries should uphold international peace, comply with rules, and respect the sovereignty and security of Middle Eastern nations, especially those in the Gulf. While President Trump had warned Xi against supporting Iran during talks in Washington, Han reassured that China would not provide such support, despite reports of Chinese assistance to Iran in evading oil sanctions.
Regarding Cuba, Han highlighted the negative effects of the US blockade, particularly following a recent collapse of Cuba’s electrical grid, which left millions without power. He positioned China as a reliable partner for developing nations and reiterated that all countries are equal members of the international community and should engage in cooperative discussions on global issues.
