Italian opposition parties have criticized an attack on press freedom after RAI, the state broadcaster, removed veteran journalist Sigfrido Ranucci from hosting its main investigative show, “Report.” Government allies support the decision, reflecting a debate over RAI’s independence, as its board is appointed by the government and parliament, leading critics to claim its editorial direction is influenced by the ruling coalition.
Ranucci’s removal, announced late on a Friday, ends his nine-year tenure on “Report,” one of Italy’s most viewed current affairs programs. He stated he would continue to fight for press freedom. The “Ranucci affair” has been a significant topic in Italian media, particularly following a bomb attack outside his home last year, which initially prompted support from multiple political parties. However, the government’s tone changed after businessman Valter Lavitola was arrested this month and allegedly confessed to orchestrating the attack.
While no evidence linked Ranucci to prior knowledge of the bombing, speculation arose in pro-government media about a possible plot to increase his popularity. This reflects the ongoing conflict regarding RAI, where critics argue the government exerts influence. Ranucci’s removal is seen by opposition leaders as part of a plan by the right-wing government to weaken “Report” before the upcoming election. In contrast, some ruling politicians endorsed the decision. RAI stated it aims to enhance investigative reporting and promote young talent, but journalists from “Report” deemed the decision unacceptable and threatened to resign if not reversed.
