Greek firefighters continued battling deadly wildfires across the island of Crete for a second consecutive day on Thursday, as Greece joined Spain and France in confronting one of Europe’s most severe wildfire outbreaks of the summer.

Two firefighters were killed after becoming trapped between advancing fire fronts near the village of Krya Vrysi in central Crete while traveling between emergency response locations. A third firefighter died while combating another wildfire in Greece’s Peloponnese region.

Mass Evacuations Across Crete
Authorities evacuated hundreds of residents and tourists from Krya Vrysi and neighboring communities on Wednesday by both sea and land as the fires advanced toward populated areas and popular tourist destinations.
More than 200 firefighters, supported by dozens of fire engines and water-dropping aircraft, remained deployed across two major wildfire zones on Thursday. The fires have destroyed agricultural land, olive groves, warehouses, and several homes.
Officials warned that worsening weather conditions could further complicate containment efforts.
Strong Winds Continue to Challenge Fire Crews
Crete’s Deputy Regional Governor for Civil Protection, Giorgos Tsapakos, said there had been little improvement in the situation.
He warned that stronger winds were expected later in the day and noted that aerial firefighting operations were temporarily suspended during the morning because aircraft could not safely operate under the prevailing weather conditions.
