Greece has finished the licensing steps needed for the survey and cable-laying work for the Great Sea Interconnector project, according to the foreign ministry. Greek authorities approved permits after the French cable maker Nexans applied on behalf of the project company GSI.
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis signed the approval following a positive recommendation from an inter-ministerial committee. A research vessel involved in the project has received a NAVTEX notice to mariners for the planned operations.
This €1.9 billion project, developed by Greece’s power grid operator IPTO AD, aims to connect the power grids of Greece and Cyprus, and eventually Israel, but progress is hampered by a dispute with Turkey over maritime zones.
