Russia Recalls Armenia Envoy as EU Shift Sparks Pre-Vote Tensions

Russia has recalled its ambassador to Armenia, S. P. Kopyrkin, for consultations due to Armenia’s growing ties with the European Union ahead of upcoming elections on June 7.

Even though Armenia is traditionally allied with Russia, it has been strengthening its relationship with the West, despite relying on Moscow economically.

The Russian-led economic union of former Soviet republics mentioned that it might suspend Armenia for pursuing EU membership and suggested a referendum. Polls show that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s pro-Western party is leading ahead of the pro-Russian opposition in the election.

Pashinyan has U. S. President Donald Trump’s endorsement and previously came to power during a revolution in 2018. Armenia claims Russia did not protect it during conflicts with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, which Azerbaijan regained control of in 2023. Russia accuses Western countries of trying to diminish its influence in the region. Armenia has not yet responded to the recall.
