Spain needs to be cautious as it strengthens its relationship with China, especially concerning important areas like data, defense, and telecommunications, according to Benjamin Leon, the U. S. Ambassador to Spain. He expressed worries about public contracts awarded to companies linked with Huawei, which the U. S. considers a national security risk. Leon suggested that if Spain keeps China out of critical sectors, negotiations with Beijing could be possible.
Leon highlighted that China aims to dominate important technologies through unfair trade practices, which could risk supply chains and security. He urged Europe to protect its research, intellectual property, and democratic values. China has denied U. S. accusations regarding unfair practices and espionage.
Tensions exist between Spain’s government and the Trump administration over defense spending commitments to NATO and the use of U. S. military bases during conflicts, such as the situation in Iran. Trump has hinted at economic sanctions against Spain for not meeting defense spending targets. However, Leon believes a compromise will emerge between Spain and the U. S. regarding their relationship. He emphasized the significance of U. S. naval bases in Spain for collective defense and stated that Europe must be prepared to defend itself, with the U. S. alongside it.
