A Ukrainian drone that crashed in Finland on Sunday contained an unexploded warhead, according to Finnish police. Ukraine has apologized for the incident, stating that the drone, part of its conflict with Russia, strayed off course likely due to electronic interference from Russia. There were no injuries or damage reported from the crash, marking the first instance of the Russia-Ukraine war affecting Finnish territory.
The drone, identified as a Ukrainian AN-196 with a 6.7 meters (22 feet) wingspan, was destroyed in a controlled detonation. A second drone, also believed to be Ukrainian, was found in Luumäki, and police are investigating whether it detonated upon crashing. Ukraine’s foreign ministry confirmed that the drones were not aimed at Finland and reiterated its apology for the incident.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy discussed the crash in a phone call. Zelenskiy mentioned that some allies suggested Ukraine might consider scaling back long-range strikes on Russian oil facilities due to rising global energy prices, but this was not discussed in the call.
