President Donald Trump is considering using ground forces to seize Kharg Island, an important oil hub in Iran. Analysts suggest that this operation could be executed quickly but might endanger U. S. troops and prolong the conflict. Kharg Island is located 16 miles from Iran’s coast and is crucial because it handles 90% of Iran’s oil exports, significantly impacting Tehran’s economy.
Recently, U. S. forces conducted strikes on Kharg, claiming to have obliterated military targets. Officials report that the Trump administration is contemplating deploying ground forces to the island, with two Marine contingents potentially arriving soon and plans for thousands of airborne troops to support a possible ground assault. Although seizing Kharg could disrupt Iran’s energy trade, it may not lead to a swift conclusion of the war, especially with upcoming midterm elections.
Experts note that taking Kharg Island could lead to an expansion of the conflict rather than a decisive victory. U. S. troops could face missile and drone attacks, including advanced drones similar to those used in Ukraine. The Iranian regime might also use propaganda to showcase the casualties of U. S. service members in any successful strikes.
There are concerns that capturing the island could provoke Iran to mine waterways further, posing risks to shipping already affected by the ongoing conflict. Former U. S. Central Command leader Joseph Votel commented that while only 800 to 1,000 troops might be needed on Kharg Island, they would require substantial logistical support and protection, raising doubts about the tactical benefits of such an operation.
