Brazilian director Karim Ainouz’s new film, “Rosebush Pruning,” examines themes of patriarchy and trauma in a wealthy family. Actor Jamie Bell, who plays the eldest sibling Jack, described the film’s style as “operatic absurdity,” noting the challenges and enjoyment of portraying characters with no wants or ambitions. Jack lives in a mansion in Spain with his three siblings and their blind father, two years after the death of their mother. These siblings include Ed, who refuses to read or write, and Robert and Anna, who try to prevent Jack from moving in with his girlfriend, Martha.
The film is not only about family dynamics but also comments on social issues. Tracy Letts highlighted that the film addresses how extreme wealth can lead to bad behavior and even fascism. Pamela Anderson remarked that it reflects a superficial aspect of today’s rich youth inheriting wealth. The screenplay, written by Efthimis Filippou, is inspired by Marco Bellocchio’s 1965 film “Fists in the Pocket,” which critiques a dysfunctional Italian family. Ainouz, who has participated in several Berlin Film Festivals, expressed his aspiration to direct a James Bond film, responding to a reporter’s question about Jack Turner potentially being cast as Bond.
