Portugal Heads to Runoff With Socialist Candidate Favored to Win

Portugal held a presidential runoff election on Sunday between leftist Antonio Jose Seguro and far-right candidate Andre Ventura, with polls indicating a strong lead for Seguro. Recent storms caused heavy rain and wind, leading to voting delays in three municipalities, impacting about 37,000 voters, or 0.3% of the electorate.

Official results are expected later in the evening, starting at 8 p.m. (2000 GMT). Although voter turnout was lower compared to the first round, some voters expressed that this was due to a lack of interest in the candidates. Despite the weather, Seguro was predicted to receive over 50% of the vote, significantly higher than Ventura’s anticipated share. Seguro gained support from conservatives concerned about Ventura’s populist style and potential undemocratic approach.

The presidency in Portugal is mostly ceremonial but has important powers, such as dissolving parliament. Ventura aims to increase presidential powers and has gained popularity through his anti-establishment Chega party, which is now the second-largest in parliament. Many voters, however, express they would never support Ventura. Some, like Rute Trindade, seek change for better disaster response, noting that while the president’s power is limited, there remains room for influence.
