A Bolsonaro Candidacy Alone Won’t Unite Brazil’s Right in 2026

Brazil has been waiting to see who former President Jair Bolsonaro would support in the 2026 presidential election.

Brazil has been waiting to see who former President Jair Bolsonaro would support in the 2026 presidential election. His recent endorsement of his son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, has raised questions about whether he can still unite his right-wing coalition. Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a long prison sentence for a coup plot, surprised many by backing his son instead of a more established candidate like Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas.

Following this announcement, financial markets reacted negatively. Many investors anticipated that Jair would choose Freitas to challenge leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Although Flavio quickly received support from family and his political party, other important conservatives have been hesitant to back him. Freitas took over 48 hours to respond, stating that Flavio could count on him, but his delayed reaction reflected a lack of enthusiasm among his peers.

Political analysts noted that there was an expectation that everyone would rally around Flavio once Jair made his choice, but this was not the case. According to a Datafolha poll, half of Brazilians would not vote for a candidate endorsed by Jair Bolsonaro, indicating a possible disadvantage for Flavio. Polls show Flavio trailing Lula by double digits, while Freitas is only a few points behind.

Flavio aims to present himself as a moderate candidate and is seeking support from centrist leaders and business figures. However, he faces challenges from emerging right-wing politicians and dissatisfaction within Jair’s base. Congressman Kim Kataguiri stated that this internal division could hinder Flavio’s chances. There are concerns that if the right remains fragmented, it may risk losing the upcoming election against Lula. Political strategists warn that unity is essential for a successful campaign.
