Massive $6.5B Investment Shields Turkey’s ‘Steel Dome’ System

Turkish defence companies signed contracts worth $6.5 billion to develop Turkey’s ‘Steel Dome’ air defence system, according to the Turkish Defence Industries Presidency (SSB). This project aims to create an integrated, multi-layered air defence system similar to Israel’s Iron Dome and was initially announced in July 2024. It includes 47 components such as radars, missiles, sensors, and command centers.

Concerns from Israeli military strikes on nearby nations have prompted Turkey to strengthen its air power. The country is also a major producer and exporter of armed drones used in various global conflicts. SSB Chairman Haluk Gorgun stated that the contracts will enhance Turkey’s deterrence capabilities, with systems developed entirely from domestic technology.

The chairmen of Aselsan and Roketsan described the contracts as crucial and highlighted their focus on space, air defence, and anti-tank systems. Despite progress, officials acknowledge that the completion of the Steel Dome project is still years away.
