A group of army officers in Guinea-Bissau announced on Wednesday that they have taken control of the country amid reports of gunfire in the capital.

They formed “The High Military Command for the Restoration of Order,” stating they will manage the nation until further notice.

This action occurred one day before the electoral commission was set to declare results from a contested presidential election between incumbent President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and challenger Fernando Dias, with both claiming victory. Gunfire was reported near key government locations but ceased after about an hour.
