At least 25 people were killed in a Russian drone and missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Ternopil, with around 80 others wounded. This overnight assault included 476 drones and 48 missiles targeting energy and transport infrastructure, leading to emergency power cuts in various regions amidst freezing temperatures. Significant damage was done to a residential building in Ternopil, with smoke rising as firefighters battled the flames. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that some residents were unable to escape due to the rapid spread of fire, while three children were among the deceased, and about 25 people remain missing.
Oksana Kobel shared her experience, expressing hope for her son who was in a ninth-floor apartment during the attack. Poland temporarily closed airports near its border as a precaution and deployed aircraft to protect its airspace. The attack coincided with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s talks in Turkey aimed at reviving peace negotiations and he called on allies to increase pressure on Russia. He emphasized the need for more air-defence missiles for Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials reported damage to energy infrastructure in seven regions, while energy usage restrictions were implemented across the country. Russia claimed the strikes were in response to Ukrainian attacks on its territories, insisting that it does not intentionally target civilians. Meanwhile, Ukraine confirmed strikes against military targets in Russia.
