Russia announced on Sunday that its forces have made significant advances in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, capturing two settlements in their effort to control the entire area. Ukraine, facing challenges with a smaller army, is trying to strengthen its defenses in the Donetsk region while managing ongoing attacks from Russian troops.
Russian forces have gained about 30 km (19 miles) in the Zaporizhzhia region over the past six weeks. They captured Mala Tokmachka and Rivnopillya, which threaten nearby towns. Ukrainian military leaders express concerns about insufficient troop levels to maintain defensive positions, despite the presence of thousands of surveillance drones.
Currently, Russia controls around 19% of Ukraine, aiming to secure all territories in the Donbas region and further in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine retains control of about 7,000 square km in Zaporizhzhia, including its city.
