The Group of Seven foreign ministers will meet in Canada on Tuesday, focusing on Ukraine and the Middle East as U. S. President Donald Trump’s peace efforts face challenges. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will attend the meeting, likely facing questions about Trump’s actions regarding the war in Ukraine and the Gaza ceasefire deal. The meeting comes after plans for a summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin were postponed due to Russia’s refusal for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.
In an effort to pressure Moscow, the Trump administration recently imposed sanctions on major Russian oil companies to push for a peace deal in the ongoing war. Although Trump has sought better ties with Russia and previously held a summit with Putin, he supports an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, while Russia demands more territory from Kyiv. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed hope for meaningful discussions on achieving long-lasting peace in both Ukraine and the Middle East, particularly as winter approaches and Canada aims to assist Ukraine with energy and food supplies.
In addition to G7 ministers, representatives from Ukraine, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, and South Africa have been invited. Discussions will also focus on the Gaza ceasefire, which began on October 10, and the complexities of advancing beyond this ceasefire. John Kirton suggested that the foreign ministers may achieve more in this meeting without Trump present.
