Bulgarian authorities, led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, are inspecting and enhancing security at Lukoil’s Burgas oil refinery to safeguard crucial infrastructure as the government prepares to take control of the site. Recently, Bulgaria enacted legal changes to allow the takeover and potential sale of the refinery to protect it from U. S. sanctions.

The government stated that security measures include inspections and the readiness of military police, emphasizing the importance of keeping the refinery and other key facilities safe. The Council of Ministers announced that various agencies, including state security and defense ministries, are ensuring security around Lukoil’s sites. They have deployed an anti-drone system and are conducting checks on vehicles entering the area.

Additionally, under the new law, a special manager may be appointed to oversee the refinery’s sale, with Lukoil unable to contest the decision. Russia’s Ambassador to Bulgaria criticized the actions as hasty and suggested they set a troubling precedent.
