Despite Collapse of Peace Talks, Ceasefire Between Afghanistan and Pakistan Holds

Peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan have collapsed, according to a Taliban spokesperson.

Peace talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan have collapsed, according to a Taliban spokesperson. The failure was attributed to Pakistan demanding that Afghanistan take responsibility for its internal security, which the Taliban deemed unfeasible. However, the ceasefire established between the two countries remains intact, as stated by Zabihullah Mujahid.

On Friday, Pakistan’s Defence Minister announced that talks aimed at preventing border clashes had ended without success, but the ceasefire would continue unless attacked from Afghanistan. Recent skirmishes along their border occurred as talks resumed in Istanbul. Clashes last month resulted in numerous casualties, marking a significant escalation since the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan in 2021. The disagreement over militant groups operating within Afghanistan contributed to the breakdown of long-term negotiations.
