China and Russia have agreed to respond together against unilateral sanctions. This commitment was reaffirmed by Chinese President Xi Jinping during a visit from Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. Both nations stated they will work together to oppose such measures, which they see as illegal if they bypass UN Security Council resolutions. This announcement comes amid U. S. sanctions related to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Xi met with Mishustin in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of expanding mutual investment and strengthening cooperation in various fields, including energy, agriculture, and digital economy. The aim is to enhance their relationship despite the challenges posed by external pressures. The leaders noted the need to prevent any country from abusing its dominant position in the world economy, indirectly referencing the U. S.

Mishustin’s visit is seen as crucial as Russia faces significant Western sanctions and seeks to improve trade with China, which has recently slowed. Despite the turbulent external environment, Xi stated that China-Russia relations are steadily advancing. The two countries have a “no-limits” partnership established in February 2022, prior to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, and they have since increased trade and cooperation, particularly in energy. However, recent months have seen a decline in bilateral commerce as China contends with rising U. S. trade and technology pressures.
