Kremlin Suggests $8B ‘Putin-Trump Tunnel’ Under Bering Strait

A Kremlin envoy has proposed building a “Putin-Trump Tunnel” under the Bering Strait to physically connect Russia and the United States. The idea, presented by Kirill Dmitriev, head of Russia’s RDIF sovereign wealth fund, revives a century-old dream of linking Eurasia and North America by rail.

Details:
The $8 billion project would create a 70-mile rail and cargo route between Russia’s Chukotka region and Alaska. Dmitriev said the plan could be completed in under eight years with help from “international partners” and possibly Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.

Why It Matters:
The symbolic proposal comes amid tentative signals of renewed U.S.-Russia dialogue after a recent Putin-Trump phone call about the war in Ukraine. Moscow has long sought ways to reduce isolation and project an image of cooperation with the West.

Neither Trump nor Musk has publicly responded. Analysts view the project as highly ambitious politically and logistically given current sanctions and diplomatic tensions.

Future Scenario:
While experts doubt the plan’s feasibility, it underscores Moscow’s desire to reframe global narratives from confrontation to “connectivity.” The idea may remain more symbolic than practical a vision of unity in a time of geopolitical division.
