YouTube has transformed significantly since its inception 20 years ago, now attracting 2.7 billion users, including prominent celebrities like Dua Lipa who produce high-quality content. It has become the leading platform for television viewing in the U. S. and is set to surpass Disney in media revenue this year. During the recent Made on YouTube event, YouTube executives, including CEO Neal Mohan, presented their vision for using artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance media creation and consumption.
The company emphasized its commitment to video creators, who are seen as the future of media, and underscored the empowering role of AI in the production process. Mohan reassured that these technological advancements would not take jobs away from content creators but rather serve as tools to support their work. He expressed that creating videos on YouTube should be recognized as a legitimate career choice as AI becomes more integrated into the platform.
YouTube’s growth has outpaced Disney, with the platform capturing 13.4% of U. S. viewership, compared to Disney’s 9.4%. Analysts predict that YouTube’s revenue will exceed Disney’s, which earned nearly $60 billion in media revenue last year. Although Alphabet, Google’s parent company, doesn’t frequently disclose YouTube’s revenue, it stated that the combined revenue from ads and subscriptions exceeded $50 billion over the past year.
At the launch event, YouTube introduced more than 30 new AI-driven features, enhancing content creation capabilities. These include tools for automatic shopping links, quick editing functions, AI-generated videos for podcasts, and a speech-to-song generator. Notably, popular creators demonstrated these tools, indicating a shift in media consumption patterns as they hold large followings, rivaling traditional entertainers. YouTube has invested over $100 billion in content creators over the last four years, supporting their transition to more professional video production.
