Greece Expands Fleet with Fourth French-Built Belharra Frigate

Greece's security council, KYSEA, approved the purchase of a fourth Belharra frigate from France to modernize its armed forces and counter Turkey.

Greece’s security council, KYSEA, approved the purchase of a fourth Belharra frigate from France to modernize its armed forces and counter Turkey.

The approval follows Turkey’s announcement of planned scientific research in the Aegean Sea. Greece previously agreed in 2021 to acquire new Belharra frigates for about 3 billion euros, with the option for one more frigate.

The senior government official confirmed the procurement, while Defence Minister Nikos Dendias mentioned that the new frigate would be armed with ballistic missiles. This purchase will be reviewed by a parliamentary committee soon. Greece’s defense strategy includes spending over 25 billion euros in the next decade on various military upgrades.
