Israel announced the beginning of its planned ground operation into Gaza City, stating that “Gaza is burning,” as military forces aim to dismantle Hamas’s infrastructure. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have instructed residents to flee the area. Defence Minister Israel Katz emphasized the military’s aggression in targeting Hamas, while Prime Minister Netanyahu linked the operation to ongoing efforts to capture Gaza City, which he views as a significant stronghold for Hamas.
Over the past two days, the bombardment of Gaza City has intensified, resulting in extensive destruction. U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently showed support for Israel’s hardline approach, suggesting that Israel’s demand for Hamas to surrender its weapons and release hostages is essential to ending the conflict. Reports indicate that at least 24 people were killed in Gaza, mostly in the city itself, during the initial hours of the assault.
The conflict dates back to an October 2023 attack by Hamas that resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people in Israel and the capture of numerous hostages. As part of the military strategy, an estimated 320,000 people have already evacuated Gaza City, while around 650,000 still remain, resulting in a considerable humanitarian concern as these residents relocate to the crowded southern regions.
Israel’s government insists that its military action is aimed at eradicating Hamas’s presence as both a political and military entity. Meanwhile, the United Nations and various countries criticize Israel’s tactics as an act of forced mass displacement, highlighting the dire conditions for those being moved to southern areas suffering from food shortages.
Concerns are also emerging from within the Israeli military about the potential risks of the operation for troops and remaining hostages. Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has reportedly urged Netanyahu to consider a ceasefire, a suggestion met with resistance by families of hostages who fear for their loved ones’ safety amid the escalating conflict.
Anat Angrest, whose son is among the remaining hostages, criticized the decision to increase military operations in areas where hostages may be present. Overall, the ongoing military assault has resulted in high Palestinian casualties, with reports indicating that over 64,000 Palestinian lives have been lost since the conflict intensified.
