The European Commission is postponing the presentation of its next sanctions package against Russia as it seeks an appropriate response to the Trump administration’s demand for faster reductions in Russian oil and gas purchases. EU officials expected to discuss this 19th package, which could include measures against Russian banks and shipping companies, on Wednesday, but no new date has been set for discussions.
U. S. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on the EU to cut off energy revenues that support Russia’s war in Ukraine. He is urging the EU to impose trade tariffs on India and China, the main buyers of Russian oil, and to end its own energy imports from Russia sooner than the planned 2028 deadline.
The EU aims to avoid energy price spikes and supply shortages while phasing out Russian fuel. European officials have indicated they are unlikely to impose severe tariffs on India or China, viewing tariffs differently from sanctions. An EU diplomat noted that Trump’s demands pose a significant challenge for the bloc.
