China, Russia, and Mongolia conducted their first joint border defense drills this week, according to the Chinese military.
The exercise, named “Border Defence Cooperation – 2025,” occurred on Monday and Tuesday in a border region shared by the three countries. The aim was to improve collaboration, address border security threats, and build mutual trust.
A joint command post was established in China, operating under a principle allowing the host country to lead with collective input. This exercise followed a trilateral meeting of the three nations’ leaders in Beijing on September 2, after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s meeting with over 20 leaders from non-Western countries. Mongolia has remained an observer in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation since 2004.
