U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran’s Kharg Island was being “blown to smithereens”, but provided no details or evidence to support the claim.
His post was accompanied by a dramatic video showing explosions, which Reuters found was most likely AI generated. There was no independent evidence that Kharg Island was under attack.
Why Kharg Island Matters
Kharg Island is Iran’s most important oil export hub and handled around 90% of the country’s oil exports before the war began in February.
Any major attack on the island could therefore severely disrupt Iran’s remaining energy exports, deprive Tehran of crucial revenue and place additional pressure on an economy already weakened by sanctions and the conflict.

US Strikes Iranian Launchers on Larak Island
The claim about Kharg came after the United States carried out strikes on two Iranian launchers on Larak Island, according to a U.S. official.
The U.S. said Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces were preparing to launch rockets and deploy sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, describing the strikes as limited and aimed at an imminent threat.
Iran subsequently launched ballistic missiles toward U.S. bases in Jordan. Jordanian forces said they intercepted eight missiles that entered its airspace.
Hormuz Shipping Falls
The renewed confrontation has also affected shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Visible commodity vessel traffic fell to just five vessels per day over the weekend, according to shipping data. The actual number may be higher because some ships have switched off their tracking systems.
The waterway previously carried nearly one fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, making continued disruption a major risk for global energy markets.
Washington Intensifies Economic Pressure
The latest military exchanges come as the Trump administration increasingly relies on economic pressure against Tehran.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington expects to introduce new secondary sanctions almost every week, initially targeting banks and financial institutions connected to Iran.
The United States has also warned that institutions could eventually be cut off from the dollar based financial system.

Trump’s statement, unsupported by independent evidence and accompanied by apparently AI generated imagery, creates uncertainty over whether Washington is signalling an actual military operation, attempting to deter Iran or shaping perceptions of the conflict.
Kharg Island would be an extremely consequential target because of its central role in Iran’s oil exports. A confirmed attack could represent a major escalation, potentially pushing energy prices higher and creating additional pressure on the already disrupted global oil market.
At the same time, the renewed U.S. strikes on Larak and Iran’s retaliation against U.S. bases demonstrate that the conflict is moving through a dangerous cycle of limited military action, retaliation and economic pressure.
