Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz and other senior military, police, and prison officials are under investigation in Italy regarding the treatment of activists from the Gaza flotilla, according to Italian prosecutors. This investigation expands from an earlier focus on Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-right national security minister.
The case involves allegations of torture, kidnapping, personal injury, theft, and destruction during Israeli forces’ interception of boats en route to Gaza in 2025 and 2026. The inquiry was initiated following complaints from 50 Italian citizens detained by Israeli authorities during two Global Sumud Flotilla missions.
Activists from the first mission reported beatings, death threats, and accusations of terrorism. Those from the second mission described more severe treatment, including beatings in darkness and the use of tasers and rubber bullets. Prosecutors have identified several individuals in the military and police command linked to these actions.
In June, prosecutors requested judicial assistance from Israel for information to help clarify events and responsibilities. Italy can prosecute crimes against its citizens that occur abroad, but being under investigation does not mean guilt and does not lead to an automatic trial. Flotilla organizers claim they aimed to provide humanitarian aid to Gaza, while Israel defends its naval blockade as lawful.
