Ukraine is facing significant issues with Starlink satellite internet, which is impacting its military operations and air defense systems. Ukrainian officials reported problems with Starlink’s military-grade service, Starshield, particularly when terminals are in motion, which has affected drone missions. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed concern that for the second consecutive night, Ukraine had not received any warnings from its allies regarding potential Russian ballistic missile strikes on Kyiv. This situation follows a decline in relations between Ukraine and the US, particularly after former President Donald Trump announced a deal to lift sanctions on Russian diesel and suggested Zelenskiy should be replaced. Despite this, Trump affirmed that the US continues to share intelligence with Ukraine, while Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, noted that the US government governs Starlink’s operational speeds.
European countries have provided strong support for Ukraine, but the issues with crucial data emphasize the dependence Ukraine and Europe have on US technology for satellite communication and missile warning systems. The US Space-Based Infrared System is critical for early missile detection, offering capabilities that Europe currently lacks. European solutions, such as those offered by satellite operator Eutelsat, are not directly translatable to wartime needs as the technology is outdated and not tailored for military use.
Experts indicated that switching to alternative systems would be challenging for Ukraine, as Starlink’s technology is not compatible with other networks. Ukrainian officials emphasized the necessity of developing independent capabilities to avoid reliance on one provider that may disable services. There is growing concern in Europe regarding dependence on US defense technology amid rising threats, particularly from Russia. European leaders have called for the development of their own satellite capabilities, as currently planned projects like the EU’s IRIS² constellation could take years to implement, causing frustration as Europe seeks to bolster its defense against threats.
