At least 27 students, mostly under 13, and a teacher were killed in Peshawar, Pakistan, when a school roof collapsed during classes. Authorities warned that the death toll might increase. Rescuers were seen pulling injured students from the rubble at the Al-Khair Education Center.
A district emergency officer reported that at least 45 children had been rescued, but some were still trapped. Most of the injured and deceased were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital. The collapse occurred when the roof of a higher floor fell, affecting two storeys.
An investigation is underway to find out the cause, with officials stating that the building was weak and overcrowded. The police chief expressed concern that more victims might be found, as only 47 of the 110 students had been rescued.
