EU members approved plans for five defence projects that will receive EU funding. These projects aim to improve Europe’s defence in areas like space, sea, air, and drone warfare. The European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs) enable collaboration among EU countries on initiatives too large or complex for one member to handle alone.
The approved projects focus on drone warfare and defence against drones, along with measures to protect Europe’s Eastern border. They also include a maritime defence project, an air and missile defence system, and a space-based defence initiative. Ireland’s defence minister, Helen McEntee, stated that these steps are crucial for safeguarding essential areas like space, air, and undersea cables. The European Defence Industry Programme has set aside €325 million ($370 million) for these projects, with more funds possible in the future.
